Empowering Female Athletes and the Growth of Women’s Sports

Sports have always held a unique power to transcend boundaries — shaping industries, influencing markets, and transforming cultures. As the intersection of business and culture continues to expand, the world of sports is witnessing an extraordinary surge in female participation. This momentum isn't just driven by high-profile events like the NCAA women's basketball championships or the Women's World Cup. It's part of a larger, lasting trend marking a new era in sports. At The St. James, we take immense pride in our contribution to this movement, as we nurture the talents of young girls and foster their unwavering passion for sports through our programs.

The Benefits of Youth Sports for Female Athletes

There are several benefits for young females in sports, from higher confidence and academic performance to improved physical health and social skills. Let’s take a closer look.

  1. Increased Confidence: Participating in youth sports helps young female athletes boost their self-confidence. Through skill development, facing challenges, and achieving personal goals, they gain a sense of accomplishment and belief in their abilities.
  2. Improved Academic Performance: Research suggests that girls who participate in sports tend to perform better academically — and physically active children are 15% more likely to attend college. Sports teach valuable skills like time management, discipline, and focus, which can translate into improved academic performance.
  3. Social Skills and Teamwork: Youth sports provide opportunities for girls to develop social skills and become familiar with the importance of teamwork. They learn to communicate effectively, collaborate with teammates, and build positive relationships.

Empowering Female Athletes: The St. James Programs Leading the Way

The St. James offers a wide range of programs designed to empower and support female athletes in various sports disciplines. Many notable achievements and exciting developments in women’s sports have been made possible through our programs. Here are some of them:

She Got Game + MLK Classic (Basketball)

She Got Game provides a platform for girls to showcase their skills and compete at a high level. We proudly serve hundreds of girls’ high school basketball teams across the nation, including many perennial powerhouse programs.

The MLK Classic is more than a mere basketball tournament. It's an enriching experience that embodies the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Teams journeying to Washington, D.C., for the event also enjoy a private tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture coupled with a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. These experiences provide a backdrop of profound inspiration for the sports action.

At The St. James, motivational speakers engage with the players, offering life lessons that go beyond the game, creating memorable experiences that last well beyond the final whistle. For more information on the MLK Classic, visit the official MLK Classic site or see our recent press coverage.

Girls Soccer Accomplishments

Our girls’ soccer program has garnered remarkable accomplishments, earning four playoff berths in the Girls Academy National Finals in 2023, with the U19s finishing second and the U17s winning the National Championship. The club has also seen a large number of players go on to play college and professional soccer, including Mya Townes (Georgia 2025 verbal commitment and member of the USWYNT U-17 team) and Emily Fox (USWNT member and currently playing for Arsenal FC in the Women’s English Premier League).
